Apple sells a product called the "Airport Express". It is a wireless networking node. You can plug your computer into it to join the network OR you can plug in a pair of speakers - this is called "Air tunes". iTunes allows you to stream music to multiple Airport Express nodes.
My idea is to create a boom-box that has an Airport Express built into it.
Right now you have to take your speakers or boom-box and your Airport Express to your listening spot. You plug the Airport Express into a wall outlet, then plug your Airport Express into your boom-box. If your boom-box needs to use A/C power, you have to plug that into the wall, too.
By merging these two pieces of equipment, you have a single box that can go anywhere in your house and you just plug it in. iTunes will find it and send music to it.
If you have an iPod Touch or iPhone with the Remote application you can control iTunes remotely as well.
There are a number of devices you can plunk an iPod into and have speakers. This is different and, I think, pretty simple to build for someone familiar with electronics. I don't think you'd even need to disassemble the Airport Express.

Neural Networks to Model Guitar Amps Printer Friendly Version
Currently there are many guitar "modellers" available to recreate sounds via DSP of various well known amps - but they never sound or respond "just right".
How about using Neural Networks to come up with accurate transfer functions to process straight guitar input signals to realistic sounding and responding amplifier output signals? You train the networks by playing the guitar through the actual amp you want to model, and use backpropogation of error to define the specific amp transfer fucntion over some training time.

The New Wave of Gaming Printer Friendly Version
every few years a new video game paradigm must be invented to keep people entertained. as time has gone on, we spend more and more time playing games like world of warcraft, everquest, the sims, and so on. i believe that the next step in games is the game that lets you achieve something in real life while you play. it's already showing up in games that are designed to make you smarter or more physically fit.

the idea is this: a game where the quests are for things that real people need done in the real world. the rewards are points towards being able to create your own quests.

for example: fred needs help digging a ditch. he puts up a quest, questers show up and do the work, and he confirms through the game that those particular players did the work. they each get XP that let them put up their own quests for compuer repair, tax work, and so on.

properly presented the game could be made attractive to kids, and the inherent financial advantage should be attractive to adults.
Reward: just let me know it worked.
