Anyone hate land mines? Printer Friendly Version
Like anyone I hate the idea of land mines that are left behind after a conflict to claim lives and limbs. However, they will continue to be manufactured to fill the military's demand.
My idea is that an internal device should be designed to be easily incorporated (at little cost), to allow a mine to be set to be active for a limited time period (say two years) after which it would be inctive and largely harmless. There are a number of ways that this could be achieved:
Incorporate a switch that will degrade at a certain predictable rate when exposed to the elements. After a certain period the circuit will break and will no longer carry the charge to the detonator charge.
Another way is to have a biodegradeable explosive charge that will degrade over a fixed period. This is not as strange as it sounds as BAE systems is focussing on environmentally friendly weapons. As far as I know this application has not been proposed to date. Achievement of this latter idea will be very lucrative while benefitting thousands of collateral victims of continuing or extinguished conflicts. This idea needs a champion to make it happen.
Reward: Letting me know that my idea was put into practice.

Home Richter Scale Printer Friendly Version
We all have seen the mini-weather stations, but we could add a mini-Richter scale for even more fun, reporting your local area's total over all conditions when you call the reporting stations. This data would be collected and help grow an understanding of future predictions of earth quakes everywhere!
Reward: A weather station! And toll free numbers to report tremors!

Rapidly Degrading Paper Items Printer Friendly Version
Driving down highways, you will see a lot of litter. Much of it is fast food packaging or other disposable paper. Education does not seem to be the answer, as we have been told not to litter for years - yet, it still piles up. More meals are being eaten on the road or sidewalk, as our lives become faster. What I believe we need is a paper that degrades quickly when exposed to the sun's UV rays.
It would seem that the addition of titanium dioxide in its anatase form to the pulp would break down the organic compounds into a powder. The speed of the degradation would probably be controlled by the amount of TiO2 added. To keep the photocatalyst reaction from starting too soon, the items would have to be kept out of direct sunlight.
It would not have to be a full breakdown of the item, just enough to produce tiny holes, as paper seems to degrade from the edges of the piece to the centre. This basic idea is being used to make self cleaning windows and buildings.
Uses:
- Take out food packaging

- Bus or event tickets

- Flyers & pamphlets

- Disposable diapers

- ATM receipts

- Cigarette butts & packages

- Women's hygene products

- Condoms
