The Tyre De-Icer Printer Friendly Version
For areas in the world that suffer from frozen and icy roads.
Tyres for cars are consumables, they wear out, and the rubber "dust" gets inbedded in and on the road. My idea is to make the rubber act as a de-icer for the roads. A chemical of some type would need to be added to the rubber to make the freezing temp of the water on the road increase. It would be constantly applied to the road through the wearing down of tyres.
Reward: safe roads in winter

Easy Oil Change Printer Friendly Version
One of my pet peeves in changing oil is that if you aren't careful, warm (if not hot) oil will run all over your hands. Further, almost always, I lose the bolt in the bottom of the oil bucket.
Here's my idea. Cars come equipped with the oil pan bolt... the bolt is removed... BUT NOTHING COMES OUT YET! Why? Because there is another step.
The oil changer then takes a wrench, after removing the bolt, and turns a nut (or for that matter, uses his hand to lift a lever, turn a knob, etc.), and THEN the oil comes out.
This gives double protection against a leak... and it makes oil changes much cleaner.
Reward: A Rolls Royce equipped thusly--ha!

In Car Signs Printer Friendly Version
Signs at the roadside could eventually be done away with if a transmitter were to replace them. This could be picked up by a micro chip receiver built into cars. The information could be displayed or read out by a computerised voice. For instance you have just entered a 40 MPH zone.
This could be encouraged by the friend of the earth groups, think of the tons of materials that could be done away with. Also when the signs needed updating this would be a simple download process from the traffic authorities.
Reward: No more ugly signs spoiling our environment.
