Miniature Refrigerator for Pet Food Printer Friendly Version
I have in mind a miniature refrigerator for both cat and dog food, which would come in different sizes and number of bowls depending on how many animals the potential customer has. The fridge would be high enough for whatever pet you have, hence the different sizes. It would be stainless steel all over with an attached water cooled filter for constant fresh water. The whole unit which I perceive as being relatively small in most cases is powered by electricity for ongoing climate control just as in our refrigerators.
The front area where the animals will eat will be high enough so as to make eating a pleasure for the pet. The food will be kept cool by strips of clear rubber flaps so as the pet can push through and eat whenever they please. There should also be some of an insect repellent strip at the front hinge of the fridge which is odourless and harmless to the pet. This will hence keep flies and ants away from the food. The bowls will be removable and stainless steel so as we can clean and replace food every couple of days. The plastic or rubber door strips at the front of the fridge will be able to be removed like curtains so as to make cleaning easier.
The owners will benefit evenly from this as they will not have to worry about food going of and giving the pet water everyday, they can make it every second or third day depending on the situation. There will also be a hose attachment so as the machine can go through a rinse cycle with disinfectant once per week. The hose will be of the washing machine type that will come with a universal attachment so all homes can clean the unit regularly.
All in all this unit should be fairly cheap especially for the single small unit for cats and toy dogs, the larger units would be a little dearer however each unit would come with a 5 year warranty so people would only have to outlay the initial cost and not have to worry about replacing chewed up dishes and dishes being mowed etc.

United States - Complainers Printer Friendly Version
The Idea is simple: Hire people who constantly complain just about anything! Hire them out to other companies looking for ways to make their business better. No complaint too small. The possibilities are endless, especially in a consumer driven market.
"We complain to Make your Customers Happier!" That's the Slogan.
The problem with employees is that they don't complain to management in person. Yet, they/we grovel all day about how bad things are. If management would listen to complaints, things just might get better. My first post - just testing the waters.
First online complaint about this site: eg: the logo at the top of this site is too big - if it has to be that big, put some more images into it! Make it appealing. Oh, it's nice and all: But put some gears into it, make it pop more!
Reward: Making a better world by complaining about it - for the sake of being picky!

Coordinated traffic signals that adapt to traffic flow Printer Friendly Version
There's an accident here on I-5 south and cars flock to side streets to avoid the delays. One lane of the interstate is blocked and miles and miles of backup occurs. But then, the side streets become congested too, then the side side streets etc.
The problem is that the traffic signals on the side streets do not adapt to the radically changed traffic pattern. Sure, some signals are programmed by the hour of the day; others are set not to change until a car arrives on the "side" street. But what about when there's an accident? Sometimes you see a cop out there directing traffic through the lights just to get things going.
I believe that the traffic lights can adapt to the traffic by two simple additions to the local control systems. One implements a car counter to detect traffic (backup and flow rate, etc). The other implements a multi-light synchronization so the entire system can adapt in coordination. It's really a simple concept - maximize the flow of cars through an intersection and compensate for nearby congestion by knowing which intersections will be receiving exiting traffic and which will be providing incoming traffic. (Optimal flow isn't local to one intersection only yet can be reasonably achieved within a small radius of nearby intersections, cooperating with each other.)
The car counter technology could be: radar based units, "photo camera" add-ons, feedback from pressure sensitive pads in the road, those tubes they put down to monitor traffic, or even car based beacons (eventually). If you have a cell phone today in your car, you have a car based beacon already. The interconnection of traffic signals / systems could be implemented easily with secure, short burst digital wireless technology. The control algorithm would be a blast to write.
Basically, in my drive home, when the freeway is clogged and people exit to bypass the accident via side-streets, the intersections that are passed through in the bypass route are adjusted (even slightly) to allow more traffic in the most travelled direction. The system and the traffic would seek equilibrium - a balance in traffic flow throughout the whole network of roads. After the congestion dissipates, the system could return to "best guess" settings derived over long term pattern analysis.
This wouldn't have to be done everywhere - but instead could be applied in areas of high "rush hour" congestion and more-than-typical re-routings.
Reward: I just wanna get home in a reasonably predictable time.
