Self sustaining Electric car

Have you ever wondered why Almost all electric cars need battery banks that are not self regenerating? Why not simply add multiple alternators onto a shaft connected to the rear axle of the vehicle and use the kinetic energy of the forward motion to charge the batteries constantly while driving? I understand that the forces on the alternator would be great if not geared to reduce the speed and prevent overcharging. A simple clutch system like the one on an auto air conditioner clutch would work just fine for this application. Disengaging when the batteries are fully charged. Ideally a series of alternators could possibly negate the use of batteries altogether if enough amperage were created.

Reward: $2600 dollars a year fuel savings and not needing to constantly recharge a vehicle = Less pollution from Electric company. Less batteries for land fills.
