Obsessed by the improvements of StarTrek and the fourth millennium, while feeling restricted by the limits of today's technology or that boring second law of thermodynamics? Just let your imagination flow - you needn't be Scotty to beam your thoughts in here!

The pen would begin degrading after a sensor or trigger detects an empty cartridge. The same principle could be applied to other desposible plastic utensils, like plasticware for eating - except the utensils would degrade after being used for a meal. In a long shot, old electronics and household appliances could be made out of biodegradable materials that could start break down. By setting off a sensor or trigger somewhere inside the device (accessible by opening a lid) to begin the process of vaporizing/biodegradation. A person would have to throw away or put the device, cartridge or utensil into a compost pile.
