Signs at the roadside could eventually be done away with if a transmitter were to replace them. This could be picked up by a micro chip receiver built into cars. The information could be displayed or read out by a computerised voice. For instance you have just entered a 40 MPH zone.

This could be encouraged by the friend of the earth groups, think of the tons of materials that could be done away with. Also when the signs needed updating this would be a simple download process from the traffic authorities.

Reward: No more ugly signs spoiling our environment.

This is a great idea, but I see one problem - older cars. I assume this is for new cars manufactured. People with older cars that love them would not be able to see the signs, and they don't want to replace their cars, esspecially if they are classics. You could develop aftermarket ones that could be installed, like putting a CD player in a car that used to have only a tape player, but not all people would want that. If they want the car in original condition, they will refuse to add such an aftermarket device. Also people who could not afford to add such a device would refuse, and it would be unfair to force them to.

This is a good idea. Classic and hot rod owners could get a removeable plug-in reciever that would mount on the dash to project onto the windshield while driving. This would keep the authenticity of the ride. There could be a transmitter strip in the road which is displayed in the vehicles dash. Another Idea is to program a portable gps to display all the messages when you hit within certain coordinates. Updated every power-up. Thats probably the direction their gonna go. (more economical)

Such a move has to be enforced by law. Since auto business is global the change has to be global too. The road signs are used by people who are not all in cars.

The idea is good and has already been demonstrated in various countries. An experiment in Japan even told the commuter the quickest (not necessarily the shortest) route taking into account various traffic densities. This included dynamic allocation of speeds to maximise green lights enroute.

However, these are all so far only technology demos.
