New promissing technology - Possible fields of application

I am trying to find applications for a promising & radical new technology which was developed at the ETH in Zurich.
The technology acts as an interface between soft and hard materials. It enables you to deliberately smoothen the transition between these materials through layering of Polyurethane. Different levels of stiffness can be achieved and stress concentration can be reduced substantially.
So my question is: Where can you use a technology, that creates an interface beween soft and hard materials? Or in other words, where do you need to efficiently combine soft and hard materials?
