GENERATION OF ELECTRICTY

IS IT POSSIBLE TO GENERATE ELECTRICTY USING LASER BEAM EITHER ON ANY FUEL PELLETS OR ON WATER/SEA WATER?
The only thing that can happen to a fuel pellet when hit by a laser beam is to catch fire. Likewise water will become steam. Lots of electric energy will be consumed to produce the laser beam.
Why not fill the pellets in a boiler, light with a common or garden match stick, generate steam, and run a turbine to generate electricity like any thermal power station?
