The new IPad, which is a substantial expense like the IPhone, both which has a sensitive and fragile screen that requires some degree of protection. My suggestion is to incorporate a flexible shutter type screen which opens for use and closes for clean protected transport. This flexible covering can be a manufacture added item or an attachable added/after market item.
