I have written a paper http://members.aol.com/fubbi2/oneworld.htm on the idea of creating a unified world by creating a process for allowing countries of the world to apply to the United States to become a protectorate of the US. The process would require both countries to vote on the admission. After a country became a protectorate, it could apply for Statehood in 18 years. Over time, much of the world would have joined the USA. Of course, not all countries would join, but the majority would see the benefits.

Colonialism and "Imperialism" have become dirty words because, in the past, they have always been annexing by force. The difference here is the annexing is by mutual choice.
