Two of the biggest problems in the United States are energy shortage and the population of obeicity in the US. So take all of the out of shape people and put them on exercise bikes that create electricity. Two problems solved.

Reward: Healthier society and safer cheaper power.

Same problems, different solution: Initiate a huge liposuction campaign ("donate fat - now!"), collect the results and use them to run a power plant. :-B

Your right -- fitness clubs might be able to supply some of their own lighting that way instead of burning it up with friction devices. Those small wheel mounted bicycle generators might be good to use for this. Then mount low voltage bulbs on the exercise machines. This way, participants can actually see the energy they are burning off.

I think it's a Nazi idea!

inmates with minor offenses could generate electricity on excercise bikes that would be fed into the power grid. We'd get free power, people could shorten their senteces a little, and jails wouldn't be so overcrowded

Unfortunately the amount of power produced by someone on an exercise bike is very small; it would be more efficient in energy terms to suck the fat out of them and burn it.

How about if the people in jail want to use electricity for their utilities they have to use an exercise bike to get it (ex TV, lights etc...). Or the people in jail would have to use the bikes to produce electricty for all the cellmates if everyone used the bikes then there would be enough power.
Also (in response to Ziks who thinks some of us are *beep*) the fat liposuction program could be voluntary so people who are fat and loving it won't have to suffer.

yea but if no one is on the bike, or just one person, the lights would go on and off, and next thing you know your walking in the oppesite genders locker room.

Actually this has already been invented...its called the Peddle-A-Watt which is a bicycle stand which harnesses energy from the bike rider into the bicycle wheel; which then sends power/energy into a generator that can be transferred into any household appliance or stored into a battery.
