Whilst I see others have mentioned problems with this idea (using the butter knife as an example) surely the actual mass of a tyre increases its capability of its use. Not to mention the fact that self heating tyres (all tyres are self heating by the way they just use friction as an energy force) w...

It has been reported that if the sound output of a university professor for one whole year is converted 100% into electricity, it would be worth 5 US cents of electric power.
One may need many professors working full time to charge one phone.

There have been many postings in Creativity Pool on various forms of electricity generators from available mechanical energy. Many were perpetual motion machines. Here is a development from Georgia Institute of Technology that seems to have a lot of potential for use in independent micro power appli...

http://www.nytimes.com/library/tech/99/07/biztech/articles/12pate.html Power is generated when work is done. In the patent described this work is done by the typist pushing down the magnet into a coil. The back emf generated will add that much MORE to the force seen by the finger. We will have a lo...

A bean bag does the same thing with less weight. Punctures will not create a mess. Liquid water will grow micro-organisms.

Bangalore is not much of a small town (Population>10million), but virtually every household has a clothes line, usually discretely out of sight. It is perennial summer too. I get scorched working in the garden without having to gaze at drying towels.

Great idea, Chris. But the numbers do not gel. Whatever the mechanism used, one still needs 550 kilocalories of heat to evaporate 1 kg of water. Also one has to pump down to about 1/25 th of an atmosphere to boil water at 30 degC. Better use a passive solar still which gives about 5 litres distilled...

The primary requirement is the availability of geothermal energy. Heat pumps are just refrigerators in reverse. They require power to operate. What is meant perhaps are heat pipes which are kind of heat exchangers that do not require any power. If local geothermal source is available it is a good id...

This one's especially for California - I have had this idea for years: As the waste water approaches the treatment plant, have it hit by a ring of laser beams. This will create steam which will turn the turbines to make the electricity. What remains will be germ free but good for topsoil, making so...
