Kettle for hot water without boiling Printer Friendly Version
The kettle is a household staple, used daily to boil water for hot drinks. Yet many of the most popular drinks around e.g. coffee and green tea, require hot but not boiling water. As boiling water burns these drinks, the kettle in its current design doesn't cater for them. I would like to see a kettle with the extra option to just heat the water until just below boiling.

3D Printing on large scale with Cob Printer Friendly Version
Cob is a natural building material made of sand (or sand-rich soil), clay (or clay-rich soil), water, and straw. It is traditionally used by mixing the ingredients with your feet, forming it into small oblong balls about 2 liters in volume, and pressing it against other cob balls to form structures such as walls.
3D printing is an additive manufacturing process whereby an object is built one layer at a time, automatically, much like the way a printer prints an image on a page.
My idea is to use existing technology to automate the process of building cob structures.
To do this, the envision a tri-pole, large scale 3D printer consisting of a machine roughly the size of a car (which may or may not be "driven" by an individual or a computer program), and containing a "print head" the size of consumer multi-color laser printer.
The "print head" is a chamber made primarily of two perpendicular metal plates to serve as the guides for each wall (thickness of the walls would be the distance between the plates), a feeder which adds new cob to the chamber, and piston which packs the cob into the chamber.
The head would be attached to a machine that has the ability to gather materials from the local environment, or from pre-made piles of sand, clay, and straw. The exact details of automating the process of combining each is an engineering challenge yet to be solved.
The machine would mix the cob, form it into blocks, add it to the queue, and move the head in high precision. The car-sized machine itself will be moved in low precision by three cables that reach up to the tops of three poles approximately 30-40 ft in the air and 30-40 feet apart from each other (telephone polls may be used), the exact dimensions giving the total range of the size of the constructed building.
Reward: A house built in the "earthship" style (passive solar heating, off grid power and water, etc...), made with the device.

Quick Release Ceiling Fan Printer Friendly Version
All I'm saying is why do i have to stand on a ladder while i'm cleaning my ceiling fan? I want a ceiling fan with a quick release to detach it and clean it on the ground then i can just hang it back up and it's clean like new!
Reward: relace my 4 ceiling fans, and they'd better look pretty!

Bathroom Cleaning Shoe Printer Friendly Version
I would suggest a simple slipper or shoe with a brush (like a cloth washing brush) attached on the bottom. This way, if you want to clean the floor you just rub with your slipper and there is no need to bend over.

Paint to Fix Leaks in Roof Printer Friendly Version
Having suffered from a leaking roof for many years (a roof that has defied all attempts to fix it) my idea is for a product that can be used by anyone. Simply paint on the ceiling of the room below to stop the water coming through.
The products currently available to stop damp penetration simply don't work when water is actively dripping through the roof, so something stronger is urgently required. I don't have the courage to climb a ladder outside and wouldn't know what to do once I got onto the roof. Also, I am tired of paying roofers to fail to fix the roof. I'm sure there are many people in my situation.
I'm aware that this would be a purely cosmetic effect and not a "proper" cure but I'm sure there would still be a healthy market for this. I can't be the only desperate homeowner with a leaking roof who has tried everything and who despairs of ever being able get her bedroom decorations to last longer than one rainstorm!
