Hot water faucetPrinter Friendly Version
Why not place coils that get hot around the spout or the entire faucet that heat up the water the instant you want HOT water?
It seems like having a huge tank of water heated by gas or electric, would be more dangerous and expensive than having a relatively small coil to heat the water as needed. It would be like when you have dimming lights, except the energy would convert to heat not light.

Reusable Carryout ContainersPrinter Friendly Version
A reusable container to use at restaurants to take leftovers from the restaurant home in. The restaurants could charge a one-time deposit fee for the container that the customer could use each time they visit the participating restaurant(s). This would be an alternative to styrofoam carryout containers, which would reduce the amount of styrofoam carryout containers in landfills. Restaurants could reduce their overhead by not using styrofoam carryout containers, save money and increase repeat customer volume by possibly offering incentives to customers who use their re-usable (embossed) carryout containers on their next visit!!

Tax Credits To Live Close To WorkPrinter Friendly Version
What if the Government offered a tax credit to move closer to your job? This would reduce commuter traffic and air pollution. There would need to be a cap on the credits and some way to verify the move and change in distance.

Energy Conservation - Parking LotsPrinter Friendly Version
Have you ever seen the city lights at night ... noise pollution right? Well what about all the costs associated with those lights? Think of all those huge parking lots that have giant lights glowing all night long ... why? Now the facility owners and management will tell you it's about security, which is vaguely reasonable. However, they only need to be on when someone is there.
IDEA: Add motion sensors to all those light poles so that when someone moves in the area at night, the lights come on, but otherwise it is peacefully dark and quiet. Given the spacing of these poles typically should create a "grid" that would light an area with any activity - security maintained. Plus the cost savings from electrical conservation.

Accommodation for the homelessPrinter Friendly Version
This system will bridge the gap between homelessness and working class. It's a system where people can work for a few hours and in return are given points they can exchange for accommodation. There are 300,000 homeless people of working age in England even more in the US. My inspiration has come from homeless people that work in third world countries. Local businesses that contribute will outsource work to the homeless on a minimum rate per hour bases. The work could be carried out at a local center not far from the accommodation and the homeless population. The type of work could vary from sorting, packing, stripping, cleaning, making furniture etc. 3-4 hours worth of work equals one room for the night. The quality of work will be monitored and the more hours completed the more points they get added onto their account.
Homeless people want a place where they can stay safe, warm with privacy and freedom. This block of apartments will give them that. The place will have a check in, security and cleaning system similar to hotels. The room sizes will be similar to student accommodation as well as shared kitchen and bathroom facilities. To keep the cost low the rooms will be somewhat plain. The place will separate females from males and couples.
This system could even be a business that makes a little profit. Local businesses that get involved will benefit by recognition and low cost labor, and the homeless get good night sleep feel better overall.
