Bridge crashes cause many fatalities on today’s roads. A system that detects the height of high load or vehicle approaching the bridge would be useful. The system could display warning signs to the vehicle and a run off lane to accommodate the vehicle to turn back. A laser system could be used or mechanical barrier system.

Actually there are very simple solutions to this problem out there - one is to put a bar across the road which is just as low as the bridge, so if a truck hits it the driver knows it would hit the bridge as well. The problem is that in remote areas, people don't want to make the investment for the odd truck coming through, but that would definitely not be better for a high-tech solution.
