When cars are on the motorway as this will be the main use, and the car infront of you brakes, you do not know how hard he / she is braking and thus accidents can be caused because you did not brake hard enough. The idea is to have the brake lights going accross the back of the car (somewhere) and when you brake a little bit a small part of the lights light up to let you know you only have to slow down a small amount, and when you slam on your brakes the whole of the lights come on giving you chance to react and slow down before you run into the back of the car in front.
