Job contacts & connections network Printer Friendly Version
Don't know about other people, but I find it particulary rewarding to try out new jobs now and then. I'm not talking about switching companies, but testing my abilities in an entirely DIFFERENT field. After all, everyone has different talents, and no single job or profession satisfies all of them.
One thing I find disturbing is that conservatively thinking employers (the vast majority) make this task unnecessarily difficult. Even if they have a position available, most of them refuse to give a newcomer the chance to prove his skills. They require you to present a list of almost identical positions you have already worked in (although you might have gathered huge experience in other fields which may be of even greater value). Or they want you to spend years working yourself up the employment ladder in their company, for no other reason than that it's always been that way and they can't imagine anything else.
There's only one way to avoid all this: business contacts. Knowing people in the field, or having someone recommend you opens all these doors and makes it much easier to get a chance.
Unfortunately, as a newcomer, you usually don't have those contacts. Sure, you have contacts in the field you last worked in, but they don't help you much here. So my idea is to create a kind of buddy network where you can swap personal contacts with other people who need them.
Let's say I want to write a newspaper column but everyone would just laugh at me because I've never worked as a journalist before. So someone in the network who is a journalist recommends me to a newspaper and lets me use his contacts. In return, I help someone else in the database who is in need of my personal connections.
This idea would need some fine-tuning, of course, but I believe a lot of people would benefit from such a network.
Reward: Let me be the first to use the network!

Aircraft Safety Printer Friendly Version
Aircraft safety is now a big issue. Hundreds of lives can be lost at one time due to small mistakes or failures. If the plane is inevitabaly going to crash and there is no way to stop it, at present the only thing to do is to sit tight and hope you survive. My idea is as follows:
There is a device (a larger version of a pilot ejection seat) that blasts the whole passenger compartment away from the wings and engines. The rocket propellors are situated at the front and the back of the passenger compartment away from the fuel tanks and engines to prevent explosions. After say 10 seconds when the rockets have burnt out and the cabin is clear of the remains, two parachutes open up, again at the front and the back, so that it can fall horizontally to the ground. The wings and engines also have a single parachute each to keep fatalities on the ground to a minimum (maybe have a siren to warn people on the ground). The fuel/engine free passenger cabin will land safely on airbags which can be opened up manually by the pilot before contact with the land/water. They will prevent the plane from sinking or absorb the impact, which could still be quite large despite the parachutes. Admittedly, there would still probably be some loss of lives somwhere due to this but it would be far less than the plane plummeting towards the ground at hundreds of miles an hour.

Virtual shopping homework with your 3D image Printer Friendly Version
We have on-line shopping sites where you can see the products and place an order. When buying clothes we always spend sometime checking the fitting and matching the colours of tops with bottoms etc.. With that foreword I want to present my idea: My idea is to take a full-size image of a person and have software convert it into a reasonable 3D image (we can ask the user for some other parameters such as height, waist and other bio-stats).
Once this is done, as part of the one-time registration process, you are ready with a digital YOU. Next the software service enables you to try various brands of clothes available. It renders it more or less exactly as it would look if you wear it. It also takes care to show the sag in the shirt if you choose a shirt of bigger size. The software service would follow certain specifications which would allow this virtual reality to be realised. The specifications would be used for both creating the virtual users while rendering the clothes on the virtual users.
After the user freezes on certain clothes, he can get the item code of the product. He can either order it on-line or print the report generated after he freezes the clothes. The report would have the item code and the addresses of the shops where these clothes are available. These shops are listed in the order of their distance from the users place.
Reward: getting it realized would be one BIG reward
