Giant Plane Safety Parachute and Balloon Printer Friendly Version
Many people these days fear for their lives when travelling on planes due to the fact that thier safety and emergency features just aren't good enough.
Some planes have two engines some have only one. Let's say all the engines are down. The plane usually goes crashing to the ground due to engine failure.
Maybe if i design some kind of giant parachute twice the size of an airplane which can be opened during an emergency which would help the plane glide safely to the ground.
In case of emergency landing on water.
To prevent the plane from crashing into the water. the parachute will first help slow down the pace of the aircraft and allow pilots to control the landing angle.
A giant air bag which can be designed to blast open at the bottom of the plane so it stays afloat the ocean upon landing.
And even if the plane does crash into the water, if the impact didn't split the plane, the baloon at the bottom will bring the plane to the surface of the water.
Reward: Many lives will be saved. Safer more ensured journey.

Modular Public Transport Printer Friendly Version
I live in Johannesburg. It is a city with virtually no form of efficient public transport. It is fairly large and is a problem to get around without a car.
My idea is to implement a modular type of public transportation eg monorail or a surface rail system within a transparent tunnel-like enclosure. This would cover the whole city in concentric tracks with bisecting tracks going out from a single point in the centre. The whole system would be completely automated. The system will automatically select the most efficient route. There will also be an arterial track between cities and towns.
I know this is a fairly futuristic idea but hopefully it will eliminate inconvenience and road car accidents.
Reward: To see it happen one day.

Transportation Safety Printer Friendly Version
A rail evaluation car could be developed to travel far enough ahead of any freight or passenger train averting a rail accident. The evaluation or "monitor car" would be un-manned and have the abilty to feed real-time data to the engineer and also to record track data for later reference and evaluation. This could save lives at train crossings and by advising the engineer of a possible derailment.
