Homesteading for the Homeless Printer Friendly Version
Almost every large American city has vast tracts of unutilized or underutilized land, usually located in proximity to very expensive, highly utilized land. Every city also has large and increasing numbers of homeless folk, and you can't help but notice that these two phenomena go hand in hand. Often, this land contains improvements, consisting mostly of abondoned and deteriorated residential and commercial structures, and is owned by the city, having been abondoned by its previous owners with taxes and liens against it.
Why not parcel this land out to the homeless to be homesteaded by them. Homesteading lets you establish your ownership of the land by occupying and improving it - you have a time frame during which you must occupy the land and must work it or improve it.
Building codes could be relaxed to permit simpler dwellings with say, two apts and a shared bath and kitchen, and the bureacracy involved in obtaining easements, permits, etc. simplified to bring down the cost further.
Other groups of people in addition to the homeless could benefit greatly from such a homesteading program, such as collectives of artists, authors, musicians, mad scientists. It would also put property back on the tax rolls and revive areas that have been completely abondoned.
Reward: An old bank building of my very own to homestead.

InfraCode Automotive Black Box Printer Friendly Version
If you're anything like me, you probably get frustrated when you're driving your car on to the interstate and, as you are about to get on, some idiot decides to slow down/speed up trying to keep you from getting on in front of him/her, causing you to run off the road and him/her going berserk and crashing into the concrete barrier inbetween traffic directions. The next thing you know the police arrive and they are trying to figure out who's at fault (and you know that it is all yours - sarcasm of course).
Well any way, my idea is a device that would record all events that take place from the time you start your car including start time, time drive engaged, acceleration times/speeds, stop times, braking points/times, impacts. etc. That way, when you get in an accident, the police officer could point his handy InfraCode receiver at an infrared transmitter, say on the dash of the cars involved, and download all the information he needs to determine who is truly at fault. By knowing the information that I have spoken of about all vehicles involved, it would be very easy to determine who is at fault. Maybe even a program could be written to interpret the data and come to a conclusion within a few seconds. Actually this would be quite simple to implement as opposed to some other ideas.

Eyesight Testing Software Printer Friendly Version
A computer program that tests peoples eyes to find their eyeglass prescription. It could duplicate the effects of the machine with the lenses that the optometrist makes you look through. The person would look at the computer screen without any glasses on and select which of two images looks clearer repeatedly, just like at the optometrist. The computer program would emulate the effect of an eyeglass lens. The image would look like what a person with perfect vision would see if he put on someones eyeglasses. Of course to someone who needed that eyeglass prescription, the image would look clear. This system would save money because you would not need the expensive equipment at the optometrist, and people could test themselves at home to make sure that they had the best eyeglass prescription.
Reward: A free copy of the software.
